Mikey Hamer is an award-winning cinematographer, director, and multi-medium artist, currently based in Walyalup (Fremantle), Western Australia. He began his career in the lighting department on major productions such as Australia, The Great Gatsby, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, before transitioning into shooting music videos, passion projects, and short films. This early experience gave him invaluable industry insights, shaping his unique style and approach.
Driven by the financial demands of living in Sydney, Mikey pivoted towards directing and shooting TV commercials, expanding his career across the US, Europe, and South-East Asia. However, in 2020, he refocused his creative energy on long-form, arts, factual, and narrative filmmaking. His recent work includes serving as the Director of Photography on Season 2 of ABC’s Perspective Shift and the indie feature Ugly Carter, set for release in 2025.
In mid-2021, Mikey faced a life-altering challenge when he suffered an acquired brain injury, which led to a year-long recovery period. This experience inspired a shift in his life and career, prompting his move to Fremantle in search of a more balanced lifestyle and artistic freedom. Embraced by the town's vibrant creative community, Mikey began exploring new ways to express his passion for storytelling. Now embracing his role as a multi-medium artist, Mikey is merging various artistic forms with his cinematography and directing projects, focusing on innovative, thought-provoking work.
